This multilingual reading is a celebration of International Mother Language Day (February 21), which was created by UNESCO to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.

Cette lecture multilingue célèbre la Journée internationale de la langue maternelle. Cette journée, créée par UNESCO, vise à promouvoir la diversité linguistique et culturelle et rappeler l’importance du multilinguisme dans nos sociétés.

We invite you to celebrate language and literature at a multilingual reading on February 24, 2023. You’ll have an opportunity to hear renowned Acadian writers Jean Babineau, Herménégilde Chiasson, and Dyane Léger. Readings in French from their recent work will be accompanied by brand-new translations created by participants in a literary translation workshop. An open mic for writers and translators who work in a variety of languages will follow.

This is a hybrid event. Join us in person at the Auditorium at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre or on Zoom by 7 pm Atlantic.

Natif du Coude (Moncton), Jean Babineau est romancier, nouvelliste et dramaturge. Ses quatre romans sont publiés aux éditions Perce-Neige : Bloupe, Gîte, Vortex (2006, prix littéraire Antonine-Maillet-Acadie Vie) et Infini (2019, finaliste au Combat national des livres, au prix littéraire Antonine-Maillet-Acadie Vie et lauréat du prix Éloizes, artiste de l’année en littérature 2022). Infini est un roman historico-fantastique qui tourne autour de la création du parc Kouchibouguac, des expropriations des habitants de sept villages et des séquelles qui ont duré un demi-siècle. Jean Babineau détient une maîtrise et un doctorat en création littéraire de l’Université de Moncton.

Jean Babineau is a novelist, short story writer, and playwright from the Bend (Moncton). His four novels were published by Moncton Acadian publisher Perce-Neige; they are Bloupe, Gîte, Vortex (2006, winner of the Antonine-Maillet-Acadie Vie literary prize) and Infini (2019, finalist for the Combat national des livres and the Antonine-Maillet-Acadie Vie and winner of the Éloizes prize for literary artist of the year in 2022.) Infini is a historical fiction about the establishment of Kouchibouguac Park, the expropriation of the inhabitants of seven village, and the consequences which lasted for half a century. Jean Babineau has an MA and PhD in creative writing from the Université de Moncton.

Herménégilde Chiasson détient, entre autres, un Master of Fine Arts de la State University of New-York et un doctorat en philo de la Sorbonne. Il a publié plus de 50 livres, écrit quarante pièces de théâtre, réalisé 16 films et exposé ses œuvres d’arts visuels dans plus de 150 expositions solos ou de groupe. En 1999 il recevait le prix du Gouverneur-Général en poésie et en 2011 le prix Molson du Conseil des arts du Canada. Il habite à Grand Barachois en Acadie.

Herménégilde Chiasson has a Master of Fine Arts from the State University of New York and a doctorate from the Sorbonne. He has published more than 50 livres, written 40 plays, produced 16 films, and exhibited his visual artwork at more than 150 solo and group exhibitions. In 1999 he received the Governor General’s Literary Award in Poetry, and in 2011 the Molson Prize from the Canada Council for the Arts. He lives in Grand Barachois, Acadie.

Dyane Léger fait partie du paysage que lui ont légué ses ancêtres. De son repaire, elle poursuit l’intarissable apprentissage de l’alphabet et de la beauté. Résistance, audace, courage et liberté ont pour elle le même sens. « La poésie est une vibration qui permet de s’habiter, qui permet d’aimer et de rêver. » De ses mains ont germé une dizaine de livres, dont huit ont été publiés. 

Dyane Léger is part of the landscape that she inherited from her ancestors. From her “burrow,” she continues to devote herself to a tireless education in the alphabet and beauty. Resistance, audacity, courage and freedom are synonymous for her. “Poetry is a vibration that allows me to dwell in my being, to love and to dream.” Her hands have created a dozen books, of which eight have been published.
